TEAM QUAIL AT LE MANS

The Great Drivers

BOB WOLLEK (1943 - 2001)

30 times entrant

Bob was born on November 4, 1943 in Strasbourg, and was champion of the army then university in skiing before being a member of the French team from 1966 to 1968.

He entered with a friend, in the rally of Mont Blanc 1967 in a R8 Gordini, and finished first.
During the selections for the Olympic Games of 1968 in Grenoble, He was injured and this put an end to his skiing career.

He was entered, without his consent, in the Shell wheel and the Trophy Alpine Mans. He finished 2nd in the Shell wheel behind Manceau F. Migault and gained the Trophy Alpine with C.Ethuin. The winner gained the right to run the 24 hours of Mans 1968. His first race on circuit was, therefore, the 24 Hours of Mans 1968 where he finished 11th in an Alpine 1300.

At that time he specialised in rallies, but then achieved a single-seater victory in F2 at Imola in 1972, in Ron Dennis’ team.

He then turned to endurance racing and achieved 4 victories at the 24 Hours of Daytona (1983, 1985, 1989 and 1991), victory at the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1985, champion of Germany Gr.5 in 1978, 1982 and 1983, and 30 participations in the 24 hours of Mans (3 poles, 4 victories of categories, 4 times in 2nd place, 2 times in 3rd place... but without any victory). And (almost) always in a Porsche.

He was killed on Friday March 16, 2001, when he was hit by a car whilst cycling near the Sebring circuit where he was to take part in a leg of the American Mans Series.
